Disruption Stages. Developing Supply Chain Resilience, part II.

Supply chain would be akin to a melody with global commerce being a symphony. As a composer steadily testing and setting up the scores to avoid dissonance, supply chain management would gain knowledge by learning from four stages of disruption. Anticipating and working on them would foster resilience.

Warning stage

Though a subtle key shift or a slight out of tune may be part of learning the melody, it is sensible to identify and analyze warning signals, as well as to interpret their cause. Working proactively on such signals provides the ability to prevent and mitigate disruption.

Escalation stage

Dissonance could reverberate and amplify swiftly. Knowledge of exposure from disruption supports impact assessment. In turn it provides rapid adequate response and minimizes the effects of a swift escalation.

Recovery stage

After the crescendo, effort for recovery takes place. Business navigate through the process of restoring current state of stability, while keeping agility as indicator of resilience and readiness for subsequent disruption.

Learning stage

Continuous learning nurtures improvement and is underlying resilience. Analyzing and understanding disruption and response enhance business preparedness, akin to increasing and refining future compositions.

As a composer setting up the scores to avoid dissonance, supply chain management would gain knowledge from four stages and trigger improvement. Those are at the heart of resilience, that being the ability of the organization to identify, respond and recover readily from a crisis.
